The Great Apes Film Initiative
The Great Apes Film Initiative (GAFI) is an innovative, grass-roots based organisation that aims to promote the conservation of great apes and their habitats. We engage and inspire people to create local and sustainable solutions to the problems facing great apes and their environments around the world.
How We Make A Difference
- By screening programmes in Africa and South East Asia through Pedal Powered Cinema.
- By doing on-the-ground projects to aid conservation measures, such as tree planting.
- Establishing a GAFI schools programme to link UK schools with those in Africa.
- Holding talks to members of the public across the world, including film festivals, conservation NGOs, universities and politicians.
To Madelaine Westwood (Founder of GAFI) and her team, television is an obvious tool to use to reach everyone from state president to agricultural farmers, army officers and school students, young and old.
Through the targeted screening of wildlife documentaries to people that share great ape habitats, platforms are created that present opportunities for the co-creation of mutually beneficial joint solutions for both endangered species and the people they share their habitat with.
We are a purely volunteer organisation and are non-profit registered. We raise money by applying for grants, running events, having a donation button on our website and running the GAFI gorilla tour in Uganda.
